Ummm...bands make tons of money on the road. The promoter is the one who takes on most of the risk. And I'd say lip-synching is far more common than using auto-tune live.

Eva: Daniel Johns

What a sweet post! Fascinating to get the behind the scenes take. It would be very interesting to know how much bands actually make...and where it comes from (CD/DVD sales, touring, etc).

Love that line about the mix-board guys and the ear picking. I always enjoy watching the roadies setting up, some of them trying to look busy and important with a serious look on their face.

Ha - nice post, Tom! I never knew you could use Auto Tune for a live show.

Also, re: The Band Doesn't Know Where They Are. Reminds me of a music festival I went to in 1999... The lead singer of Silverchair (what was that skinny Cobain-imitator's name again?) kept repeating "Yeah, Calgary! You're the best crowd ever, Calgary! Woo, Calgary!" while 20,000 angry Saskatoonians (Saskatonians? Saskatoonites?) booed thunderously. He didn't clue in until the end of the set.

I love music! This was a great post for a Friday! Has anyone followed a band on the road? I bet you can get some great stories about traveling across America and about the music scene. It would make a great series of travel articles.
