I live in Detroit and between the broken glass everywhere, total lack of bicycle lanes that actually go somewhere and the need to ride in zones marked 45 but which the vehicles are using as a test strip for the Autobahn this is a horribly bicycle unfriendly city. Public transit also sucks … but that’s another comment on another day.

We DID have some lanes that paralleled a freeway all the way to Toledo but, after a couple or rapes, they closed it down.

I live in upstate New York. I started riding back and forth to work about 12 years ago, because I was having trouble fitting exercise into my day with young children. At the time it added about 10 minutes to my commute, now I do it because it is therapuetic. I changed jobs about a year ago, now my ride about 15 minutes longer, but I am much happier when I am riding. I started riding a few months a year, I now average about 8 because I draw the line at about 28 degrees! Not to say the 12 years have been incident free…. one attack by a buck when I interupted a moment, and one truck with tinted windows opened the door in my path. As I have told friends and family, the benifit far outweighs the risk!

Thanks for the comments all! I am bouyed a bit by the number of cyclists I see in Melbourne. In fact, sometimes it’s so busy it’s actually a little annoying! But much rather be annoyed on a bike than in a car.

It’s a good thing I work at home, because I’d be terrified to bike to work in NYC!
That being said, I’ve been noticing more and more dedicated bike lines, especially in the Village. Thanks for this article!

I would have to agree, except I had the same problem when dealing with bike safety – broke my wrist on my regular commute.

This is yet another reason I want to emigrate (to France)… The weather here in London’s often too bad to cycle, esp when it’s chucking down and dicing with cars doesn’t make for a very long life. I could take one or the other, but it seems drivers here just simply lose the plot if the weather’s inclement…!
