Yes. I grow lettuce mixes in my house. I haven't grown other vegetables inside. I usually start them inside the house and then transplant them outside. But, I know that with enough sun and a big enough pot, you can grow a really nice pepper plant inside. I would find a local garden center (not Lowes or Home Depot). Buy the seeds or plants there and tell them what you want to do. They should be able to give you advice on temperature requirements, sunlight, and care.

Sorry I took so long to answer. I tried a week ago, but the comment was eaten by the Internets.

I don't use a rigid schedule for harvesting. Learn what the herb looks like full grown (find pictures or look at the grocery store/farmers market). Harvest leaves when they get that size. If you wait, and try to save them for later, then the plant might not respond as well when you do harvest.

I check for herbs that are ready when I am deciding what to cook for dinner and when I am watering.

If you are really unsure, you can grow extra plants. That way you can experiment and not worry about messing up a few. That is an approach I like!

@Juliane

Harvest when the leaves are relatively large. Take a look at the fresh herbs at the grocery store (or, better yet, the farmers market) if you don't how big a particular herb typically gets. Don't be too worried about the timing. The best plan is to make it a habit to use your herbs in your cooking. Also, when I water my plants, I will harvest whatever looks ready. I don't keep track of days.

Some people don't harvest regularly because they aren't planning on using the herbs just yet. But if you wait too long (weeks or months - it's fuzzy), the plant will not grow new leaves as easily.

I hope that isn't too general of an answer. But it will vary based on what herbs you are planting and how well they are doing. Learning to judge a healthy herb will serve you well. Besides, counting days sounds a little too rigid for me.

Good luck!

I grow baby lettuce in my kitchen window. I have started many other vegetables - but only to get them off to a good start. After a couple months I move them into the garden.

If you want to raise them completely inside, just look up the ideal conditions for a variety of vegetables and see if you can match that. For example: heat-loving plants won't like an air-conditioned apartment.

My only other advice: Just try it. Seeds are cheap.

I am totally going to start an herb garden. But one question: "harvest frequently" = once every two weeks? Once a month?
